Rod’s Report – Vol. 1, Issue 3
On Thursday, May 9th, I had the honor of co-hosting a town hall event in Shoreline with King County Sheriff John Urquhart. It was a great chance to hear directly from folks about the issues that are important to them. Shoreline was the first in a series of meetings that I will be hosting in every community in District 1, including one tomorrow with Attorney General Bob Ferguson at the Northgate Community Center. I hope you can join me at one of our upcoming town hall style meetings to share your concerns. Here is the information for my Spring 2013 Town Halls:

District 1 Van Donations 2013
Each year, King County Councilmembers have the opportunity to donate retired Metro vanpool vans to nonprofit agencies and local governments to meet the needs of senior citizens, people with disabilities, youth, and low-income people. Our office had plenty of qualified applicants this year; here are the three organizations we selected:
- Northwest’s Child
- SHAG Senior Housing North King County
- Renton/Skyway Boys & Girls Club
I wanted to highlight one of the groups we selected, Northwest's Child, which is an incredible organization that has been serving our community since 1991. Northwest's Child provides care in community settings to children, teens and adults with moderate to severe disabilities. They support clients in assisting with vocational training, independent living, and individual education plans. Northwest's Child offers continued educational and social experiences, encouraging clients to grow and build meaningful relationships with peers and staff as well as effectively integrate into their community. They help families in accessing the resources and services that their child/young adult family member needs to ensure that they are advocating effectively for our communities most vulnerable.
Northwest's Child serves families in all corners of King County, including families in, Shoreline, Kirkland, Redmond, Bothell, Kenmore, North Seattle, White Center, South Seattle, Federal Way, Kent, and West Seattle. The families served are primarily medium low to low income and primarily single parent homes.
Northwest's Child will be using the van to expand and increase outings, volunteering opportunities and fieldtrips and give students a chance to explore Western Washington.

Memorial Day:
Honoring Our Veterans
This summer marks the 60th Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice, an event especially important to me, as my father, Al Dembowski, is a Korean War Veteran.
Here at the King County Council we wanted to honor the men and women who served in what is often called the “Forgotten War,” and make sure they know we will never forget their service.
On Monday, June 24th, the King County Council will host a reception and recognition for Korean War Veterans and their friends and family. More information on the event can be found here. Please spread the word and join us for this special celebration! |

Evan and Camden’s Books of the Month
In my last e-news, I introduced a new tradition in honor of "Bob's Bus Books" called Evan and Camden's Books of the Month. My two boys, Evan (11) and Camden (8) are avid readers. Here are their picks, and critiques, in their own words, of their favorite books this month:
Camden's Pick: Horatio's One Wish by Joshua Kriesberg – "a book about a hedgehog named Horatio whose only friend is a river otter named Rollic. One day Rollic goes to visit a swimming hole and goes missing. And Horatio goes on an adventure to find him. I highly recommend you read the book to find out what happens and I really liked the book."
Evan's Pick: The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan (young readers edition) -
"The Omnivore's Dilemma is a very sad but informative book because it tells us about where 'industrial' or processed food comes from. It talks a lot about corn and cattle. What the author describes is very gross. In summary, I would not recommend this book."
Let me know what you and your children or grandchildren are reading. |
