Recycling Services Restored in Rural Parts of King County

Dear neighbor:

Great news! Free recycling services will be preserved at the Enumclaw and Cedar Falls Transfer Stations! After hearing from a large number of my constituents, I directed Council analysts to investigate and report back to me how we can preserve recycling services. After they contacted the King County Executive's Office, we were fortunate to receive the news that the decision to cut services has been reversed for the rural areas.

These stations primarily serve rural residents where "curbside service" isn't necessarily available in the traditional sense. Many of my constituents live hundreds of feet from the end of their driveway. Some are elderly and find the large bins unwieldy. Others live in rural areas where trucks cannot access. Finally, I have also heard from those living in mobile home parks or housing complexes where a property manager ultimately makes the decision whether to purchase curbside services.

This is a great victory for the rural residents of King County, and it was made possible because many of you contacted my office, the Executive, other Councilmembers, or even King County Solid Waste directly. Providing a one-stop station for recycling is in line with King County's philosophy of protecting the environment, and I am glad King County and its residents can continue to work together to encourage reusing resources.

While it may be unfeasible to continue providing free recycling services at all King County Transfer Stations, I applaud the decision to partially-reverse course and preserve this important service in the rural areas.

Any questions you may have about recycling at the transfer stations can be directed to King County Solid Waste at 206.296.4466, or you can get more information from their website at https://your.kingcounty.gov/solidwaste. Also, my office is always available to hear your comments and answer questions. Please feel free to call my office at (206) 296-1009 or email me at Reagan.Dunn@KingCounty.gov with any questions or concerns.

Best regards,
