Dear Friends

On July 9, I took part in the Reddington Levee Setback project groundbreaking.  Crews have now begun moving earth on the $8 million project in the city of Auburn – the largest in-river flood protection project since the creation of the King County Flood Control District in 2007.

The King County Flood Control District is a special purpose government created to provide funding and policy oversight for flood protection projects in King County. Since the Flood District was formed 68 construction projects have been completed to protect public safety, the regional economy and King County’s critical infrastructure.

As Chair of the King County Flood Control District, this project has been a high priority for the Flood District. The Reddington Levee Setback project project will enhance flood protection for hundreds of Auburn residents and hundreds of millions of dollars of residential and commercial properties.  This project will result in a wider corridor for moving flood flows, and a wider river bank vegetation corridor for enhanced ecological benefits. It will greatly reduce flood risk to residents, businesses and infrastructure within the city of Auburn and the Green River Valley.

The Reddington Levee Setback Project is part of a larger overall flood management strategy for the entire Green River. Other construction projects on the Green River this summer include:

• Construction of a levee at Hawley Road in Kent,
• Construction of a secondary levee and levee-wall combination near the existing Boeing Levee in Kent,
• Construction one of four flood walls at the Briscoe-Desimone levee in Kent, and,
• Upgrading the Black River Pump Station near Renton.
