Dear Friends,

Throughout this year, I’ve told you about the King County Heroes Employment Reintegration Opportunity (HERO) program, legislation that I was proud to sponsor.
The HERO Program is open to any military veteran who meets King County Veteran’s Program (KCVP) qualifications. There is a competitive selection process, and once chosen each participant receives an hourly wage for 30 hours of work per week for six months.

HERO Program graduates

Read the biographies of all the HERO Graduates pictured above.

On June 24, the members of the Council were joined by County Executive Constantine in celebrating the first graduating intern class. The 8 members were spread throughout the County, but there is one that I specifically want to introduce to you.
Jay Parales is a United States Marine, deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 where he served in the military police, performing logistics patrols. Jay is still serving as a reservist out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Jay is 2012 graduate of the University of Washington double majoring in Law, Societies, & Justice and Political Science with a minor in Human Rights.  And for the last six months, Jay has been interning with the County Council as part of the HERO program!

Jay was an ideal fit with the Council. During his internship, Jay helped Council staff with various duties that included drafting amendments, staffing committees, legislative analysis and reporting.  Jay’s military background has instilled him with professionalism, commitment, and attention to detail that would be beneficial in any workplace—and I am proud to say the County Council has decided to hire our Jay, our HERO intern, as a full-time analyst!
