King County Councilmember Joe McDermott

Hello friends,

Fall officially arrives tonight and as I shared in the last email, summer is my favorite season, so I am not thrilled with the ripening pears, colorful leaves, and crisp morning air. Despite that, I hope you are all well and staying both dry and warm. September has been busy at the Council, read on to learn more about what’s happening across the county and in D8!

Metro Turns 50!

This year marks 50 years of King County Metro providing public transit service to residents of King County. To mark this occasion, we’re having a party! On September 27th, come celebrate at Lake Union Park from 12-5 pm. You’ll be able to grab cake and see both historic and current modes of transit, get exclusive 50th anniversary merchandise, and see a one-day-only exhibit at MOHAI featuring lots of Metro memorabilia. If you’d like to attend, please RSVP here.

King County Trolls

Have you seen any of our new troll friends in District 8 and beyond? Over the summer, we acquired four new troll art installations in King County, created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo. These trolls are part of his NW Trolls Exhibition and all are made from recycled materials. You can learn more about the project on this website. We are fortunate enough in District 8 to have two trolls found in our district, one on Vashon Island and one in West Seattle. I have been to visit both and think they make wonderful additions to our community! If you find yourself in West Seattle, feel free to say hi to Bruun Idun down at Lincoln Park and if you’re over on Vashon, look for Oscar, the Bird King.

Metro Mobility Survey

Metro is currently working on a plan to improve accessibility for all users within its programs, services, and activities in order to ensure everyone in King County is able to ride Metro to get where they need to go. An important part of this plan is community feedback. If you’d like to share your thoughts regarding accessibility within Metro services, please fill out this survey by October 15th. If you’d like to learn more information about Metro’s plans, please visit their blog.

Have a great weekend,

-Joe
